I had purchased the web domain of my name years ago and I though it was time to put it to use. So, I have been preparing a new separate site to showcase my photography and I think it’s finally ready for prime time. Many of the images I have presented here on my blog, but I’ll be making frequent updates with new images.

John Lautner Architecture Tour

In celebration for architect John Lautner’s would be 100^th birthday the MAK Center for Art and Architecture and the John Lautner Foundation hosted a tour of four of Launter’s spectacularly designed homes: Jacobson House (1947), Harpel House (1956), Sheats/Goldstein House (1963,1980+ Remodels) Schwimmer House (1982). Tucked away in the hills of Los Angeles these houses are under the care of amazing homeowners who love and embrace the heritage of their homes and so graciously opened their homes to honor Launter and his work. The homes toured spanned several decades and showcased Launter’s creativity and engineering prowess that even today is astonishing.

Black and White Film Photography

This Canon AE-1 will be my summer muse as I have I enrolled in a Black and White Film Photography class at a nearby university. My experience with working with film is very limited and for the most part it consisted of buying deposable cameras and dropping them off at the 1-hour photo to be developed. A few years back when I ventured into photography and bought a SLR camera the logical path was to go digital since no one I knew shot film. I am extremely excited to go back to where modern photography started and know I am going to learn a great deal and come away from the class being inspired. Developing my photos in the darkroom will be a major component to the class and while it looks like an intimidating process I’m sure I’ll enjoy every minute of it.

I can’t wait for my first photo assignment!

Anza-Borrego Desert Retreat

This Anza-Borrego desert jewel was designed by Craig Abenilla of FoundatonForForm Architecture and Development. His client, an avid photographer, built the house to be her desert getaway and her personal place for reflection and inspiration. Her spectacular work is featured on nearly every wall and she has a whole wall showcasing her award winning exhibit. Most of her images are of things she finds abandoned on the desert floor and are truely amazing finds.

Photo Featured in Riviera Magazine

In the September/October 2010 issue of Riviera Magazine, a Modern Luxury Publication, one of my architectural photographs was featured in an article. This modern desert house was designed by Craig Abenilla of FoundationForForm Architecture & Development. I will be posting more images from this photo shoot so be sure to check back soon.

San Marcos Community

Autumn Terrace is the newest mixed use, affordable housing development by the developer Community Collective, located in San Marcos, California. The high density development was designed by FoundationForForm Architecture & Development lead by Mike Burnett, Architect AIA and Craig Abenilla.

At street level the front facade holds commercial retail spaces that will soon be occupied by local businesses. The 103 residential units are divided up in several multi-story buildings each circulating and focusing on the central courtyards converging at the two main axes through the site. The City of San Marcos required the complex to meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Rating of Silver, which they exceeded and was certified as a LEED Platinum Building.

Architect, Mike Burnett was quoted in the North County Times, “The complex is designed to create a sense of community space amid a dense development. Open courtyards and wide sidewalks promote public safety by leaving public areas easily visible, he said. And design details like recessed windows and varied facade colors help break the large buildings into a more accessible size.” Click for the North County Times article.

A fun note about shooting this at night, which was my first night shoot by the way, and I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to do so. Craig and I went into every single residential unit (all unoccupied) to turn on all the lights in each to prep for the night shoot. Once it was dark and the photographing was done we hiked up and down the stairs and again went into to every apartment to turn off the lights.

Craftsman Kitchen Photo Shoot

This is a little craftsman kitchen that went through a major transformation and was a project designed my office. Although not a design I was involved with, I did however photograph it. Fellow photographer friend and co-worker, Marissa, assisted me on this shoot and we spent the first hour playing around with lighting trying to even out the lights in the room. Surprisingly enough this room was difficult to photograph. The windows and door face north and the morning was gray and overcast, which I believe typically make for a good recipe for even lighting. Well that wasn’t the case was us that morning.

The second photo was the most difficult because of fighting the light blasting in from the windows and door, but was able to counter balance it with some flashes. We used three Speed lights, which Marissa was stuck crouching on the ground beneath me and the tripod holding a flash to light up the island, which was just too dark in all our test shots. It was yet another fun learning experience and can’t wait for the next one.
